Introduction for OTs
This resource is designed to support occupational therapists (OTs) conducting home assessments for NDIS participants who may benefit from Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) or home modifications.
Key Assessment Areas
1. Entry and Access
- Width of doorways (minimum 820mm clear for High Physical Support)
- Ramp gradients and step heights
- Path of travel from car park/street to entry
- Level threshold at front door
2. Bathroom and Toilet
- Space for wheelchair turning (1500mm x 1500mm)
- Shower access — level entry, fold-down shower seat
- Grab rail positions and height
- Basin height and knee clearance
3. Kitchen
- Bench height and knee clearance
- Cooktop safety (induction recommended)
- Reach to storage
4. Circulation Spaces
- Hallway widths (minimum 1000mm)
- Door swing clearances
- Emergency evacuation paths
Documenting SDA Need
When writing an SDA support letter, include:
- Functional impact statement — describe in detail how the participant's impairment affects daily living
- Current housing inadequacy — specific features of current home that cannot accommodate needs
- SDA design category recommendation with clinical rationale
- Technology requirements — especially for High Physical Support (ceiling hoists, ECU, etc.)
